From Rome to the World: Suzy Amis Cameron on Reimagining Fashion

Alina Balijja

Fashion moves swiftly, often dominated by the frenzy of immediate consumption, and there are voices calling for us to slow down, reflect, and radically rethink the paradigms of luxury and beauty. Among these voices, Suzy Amis Cameron stands out, a pioneer in the sustainable fashion movement.

Suzy Amis Cameron, renowned environmental advocate and visionary entrepreneur, has chosen Rome—the Eternal City—as the global headquarters for Inside Out Fashion, Textiles & Home. This ambitious project aims to transform fashion and design into regenerative and cultural forces. Situated in the prestigious setting of Via Principessa Clotilde 1A, Inside Out inaugurates the first global hub that integrates fashion, textiles, and interior design under a unified mission: radically redefining an industry that remains excessively extractive and polluting.

It is here we meet Suzy, who guides us through her vision with remarkable clarity, turning each response into an invitation to act and dream together.

There is something deeply human and authentic in Suzy Amis Cameron’s gaze, a powerful delicacy, a rare empathy that shines through both her words and actions. Her message is clear: sustainability is not merely a trend but a cultural renaissance.

Rome, therefore, symbolic and historical heart of Europe, rich in history, art, and artisanal beauty—what convinced you, Suzy, to choose this city instead of Milan as the global headquarters for Inside Out Fashion, Textiles & Home? What message are you sending by launching this visionary project here?

Rome represents a shift—a conscious re-centering of sustainable fashion in a city where ancient legacy meets the future. Inside Out is a global organism, already active in hubs like New York, Los Angeles, London, and New Zealand. While we have no set plans for Milan yet, we absolutely see opportunities to expand into key cities that align with our mission. But for now, by choosing Rome, we’re making a bold statement: that the future of sustainable fashion will no longer be dictated solely by traditional power centers. It’s time to build new hubs of innovation, starting here.”

Suzy is keen to clarify that “By choosing Rome over Milan, we’re signaling that sustainability is not just a commercial trend but a cultural renaissance. This launch marks a new era, one where fashion becomes a vehicle for enduring impact, designed to last not just seasons but generations.”

This idea of profound and lasting change is also reflected in the Roman space inaugurated by Inside Out—a place designed to evoke emotions and inspire new awareness. What emotion or vision do you want people to feel when they step into this new space? Is it a headquarters, a cultural laboratory, or the start of a global movement?

It’s all of these—and more. When people enter the Rome space, I want them to feel a spark: the realization that they’ve stepped into a living ecosystem of innovation, artistry, and responsibility. This is more than a headquarters; it’s a cultural lab where ideas collide and collaborations ignite. And make no mistake—it’s not a quiet revolution; it’s a bold declaration that the future of fashion will be regenerative, inclusive, and global.”

Your ability to blend Italian tradition with an innovative mindset shaped by your American experience, where education and ethical enterprise intersect, is truly impressive. What insights or experiences from U.S. do you believe can be most transformative for driving change within Italy’s heritage-rich fashion landscape?

From the U.S., I bring a mindset of urgency and reinvention. We don’t just reform systems; we redesign them. Italy’s artisanal strengths are extraordinary, but when paired with agile, impact-driven strategies, they become unstoppable. It’s not about importing solutions; it’s about co-creating new models that respect tradition while unlocking fresh possibilities for sustainability and regeneration.”

The word “regeneration” frequently appears in your vocabulary. Inside Out seeks to transform the fashion industry from an extractive force into a regenerative one. What’s the first tangible step a brand should take to align with this movement?

The first step is radical transparency. Brands must illuminate the human and environmental stories embedded in every garment—the farmers, the artisans, the landscapes. When consumers connect to these narratives, their desires shift: from ownership to stewardship. Only then can regeneration become not just a moral imperative but a magnetic force within the market.”

Education, therefore, becomes an essential component of this cultural shift — a core pillar of the Inside Out ecosystem — as also evidenced by Suzy’s experience with children at the MUSE Global School.
Through your experience with MUSE Global School, how has working closely with children deepened your understanding of sustainability’s role in fashion? Has a child’s observation ever reshaped your own perspective?

Children are profoundly intuitive; they see the world’s contradictions without the filters adults have learned to apply. At MUSE Global, I’ve witnessed how naturally they grasp the idea that harming the planet makes no sense. Their creativity and fairness remind us that sustainability isn’t complicated—it’s common sense. They challenge us to realign our industries with the values they instinctively hold dear.”

This ability to see things in their essence is equally valuable in redefining what “luxury” truly means in an era where “sustainability” risks becoming an empty word; Suzy redefines the concept for us:

True luxury today is defined by care and connection. Visible markers include craftsmanship, quality, and timeless design. But the invisible markers—ethical labor, low-impact production, regenerative sourcing—are what give it soul. We must embrace a new language of luxury, one rooted not in excess but in reverence, resilience, and responsibility.”

What you’re saying is truly fascinating. I’d like to delve even deeper into this idea. So, how should we redefine what’s desirable in fashion, moving away from status and surface toward values like transparency, dignity, and regeneration?

We reshape desire by reshaping the stories we tell. Desirability has always been about aspiration. If we elevate values like transparency, human dignity, and environmental stewardship as aspirational, we create a new narrative—one where the most coveted garments are those that honor life, not just style.”

In this context, Italy plays a central role, thanks to its unequaled artisanal tradition. What are your thoughts on this?

Italy’s greatest asset is its deep-rooted philosophy of beauty, craftsmanship, and longevity. These are the exact foundations needed for sustainable luxury. But Italy’s role isn’t just to preserve tradition—it’s to lead a renaissance of ethical transformation. When Italian artisans see themselves not only as guardians of the past but as architects of a regenerative future, they reposition Italy as the global beacon of what sustainable fashion can become.”

Thank you, Suzy, for sharing your vision and commitment with Gazetta.—something we all deeply appreciate and admire.

With the inauguration of Inside Out’s Roman headquarters, supported by the collaborative work with Matteo Ward and backed by prestigious institutions and universities such as MIT, Texas Tech, and Georgia Tech, Suzy Amis Cameron delivers a clear and powerful message: fashion can and must become a tool for cultural and ethical regeneration. Her ability to weave together scientific rigor, artisanal beauty, and educational commitment shows us that sustainability is far more than a goal—it is a way of rethinking our relationship with the planet.

Today, Rome lays the foundations of this revolution, and the future it envisions promises a luxury defined by respect, inclusion, and hope.
