The Woman Reimagining Luxury

An interview with Angana Maheshwari, Founder & CEO of Veganologie
There was a time when luxury was defined almost exclusively by its materials. Leather, silk, precious metals and rare skins shaped the vocabulary of craftsmanship and desirability. Today, that language is evolving, and a new generation of entrepreneurs is challenging long-held assumptions about what luxury should look (and feel) like.
Among them is Angana Maheshwari, Founder and CEO of Veganologie, the Dubai-based accessories brand that has rapidly emerged as one of the Middle East’s most distinctive voices in conscious fashion. Her ambition was never to create another sustainable label or to follow a growing industry trend. Instead, it began with a simple yet surprisingly difficult question: why was it still impossible to find a beautifully crafted handbag that combined exceptional design with genuine environmental responsibility?

“I was looking for something that checked every box,” she tells me. “Beautiful, durable, responsibly made and honestly priced. It simply didn’t exist.”
Rather than compromising, she decided to create it herself.
What began as a personal search soon evolved into Veganologie, a brand where material innovation, thoughtful design and cultural storytelling coexist naturally.
From a Personal Search to a Global Vision
Launching a fashion brand without previous experience in manufacturing or production would intimidate most entrepreneurs. For Maheshwari, however, the challenge became an opportunity to learn every aspect of the industry, from sourcing innovative materials to developing ethical supply chains and understanding the complexities of luxury craftsmanship.
The brand officially launched in January 2022, but its foundations had been laid much earlier. Growing up between London, Germany, Luxembourg, New York, Toronto and Dubai exposed her to different cultures while nurturing an awareness of environmental responsibility and social impact. Her academic background, a Bachelor’s degree from New York University and a Master’s from the London School of Economics and Political Science, provided the strategic thinking that would later shape Veganologie’s philosophy.
“My love for geography taught me how interconnected ecosystems are,” she explains. “My first job in media taught me the power of storytelling, (therefore) Veganologie became the place where those two passions met.”
That combination remains one of the brand’s defining characteristics as Veganologie does not merely manufacture accessories; it communicates an entire philosophy where every product becomes part of a broader narrative about humanity’s relationship with nature, beauty and craftsmanship.
Luxury Without Compromise
One of the most persistent misconceptions surrounding sustainable fashion is that environmental responsibility inevitably requires aesthetic sacrifice. Maheshwari rejects this assumption entirely.
“For us, sustainability and aesthetics were never meant to be in competition,” she says. “That tension only exists when sustainability is treated as an afterthought rather than a starting point.”
This philosophy is reflected in every stage of Veganologie’s development. Alternative materials are selected not simply because they replace animal leather, but because they meet the same standards of durability, elegance and longevity expected from luxury accessories.
The company works with innovative materials including apple leather, bamboo fibres and recycled components, while maintaining meticulous attention to construction quality, hardware, stitching and finishing. Every supplier undergoes rigorous auditing to ensure that sustainability extends far beyond the final product.
“If anything,” Maheshwari observes, “the constraints sharpen creativity. When you can’t rely on traditional shortcuts, you have to design more intentionally.”
The approach appears to be resonating with consumers.
Some of Veganologie’s earliest customers arrived with understandable scepticism, questioning whether sustainable materials could genuinely match the tactile experience of premium leather. Their reactions surprised even the founder.
“We’ve had genuine leather users tell us they expected a compromise, only to discover our Apple Leather pieces feel every bit as premium.”
One story has become almost legendary within the company.
“A customer’s laptop flew off the roof of a moving car on Sheikh Zayed Road while inside one of our laptop sleeves. The laptop survived completely unscathed.”
For Maheshwari, moments like these represent something more significant than durability tests.
“People often walk in expecting ‘another sustainable product’. They walk out convinced that sustainability doesn’t have to compromise quality.”
Dubai’s New Fashion Identity
Although Veganologie speaks to an international audience, its identity is deeply rooted in Dubai.
The emirate’s emergence as a global centre for creativity has provided fertile ground for entrepreneurs willing to challenge conventional definitions of luxury.
“Dubai didn’t just host my entrepreneurial journey, it shaped it,” Maheshwari says. “This is a city that rewards ambition and embraces new ideas.”
More importantly, she believes the UAE is beginning to move beyond its historical role as a consumer of global luxury brands.
“There is something incredibly powerful about proving that the Middle East isn’t simply consuming international fashion, it is creating it.”
This perspective positions Veganologie within a broader movement of regional designers who combine local cultural references with international design language.
Rather than imitating established European luxury houses, they are developing an authentic Middle Eastern aesthetic capable of competing on the global stage.
Storytelling as a Design Philosophy
If craftsmanship forms the physical foundation of Veganologie, storytelling provides its emotional core.
“Storytelling isn’t a marketing layer,” Maheshwari insists. “It’s the foundation everything else is built on.”
This belief extends to every collection.
Nature frequently becomes both inspiration and protagonist. Leaf motifs, botanical references and endangered wildlife appear not as decorative elements but as narrative devices that encourage emotional engagement.
One particularly meaningful example is the Watan Wild Collection, where endangered species native to the UAE are transformed into illustrated characters with individual names and personalities.
“People protect what they’ve fallen in love with,” Maheshwari explains. “And falling in love begins with a story, not a statistic.”
It is a remarkably effective way of translating abstract environmental concerns into tangible emotional experiences.
The Arabesque Collection: Heritage Reimagined
This dialogue between culture, sustainability and design reaches new maturity in Veganologie’s latest launch: the Arabesque Capsule Collection.
Inspired by Arabian architecture and the visual language of Islamic geometry, the collection celebrates the cultural identity of the UAE through contemporary craftsmanship.
At its centre stands the Arabesque Tote, distinguished by a geometric front panel engraved with classical Arabian architectural motifs. Rather than functioning as simple ornamentation, these patterns embody principles of balance, rhythm and harmony deeply embedded in regional artistic traditions.

Constructed from 100% bamboo fibre and complemented by recycled zinc alloy hardware, the tote demonstrates that responsible materials can achieve remarkable sophistication. Despite its generous dimensions, the bag remains exceptionally lightweight while offering a structured interior with four carefully designed compartments, successfully balancing functionality with elegance.
Available in Dunes and Dusty Rose, the colour palette reflects the landscapes of the Emirates while maintaining timeless versatility.
Accompanying the tote is the Heritage Tassel, perhaps the collection’s most symbolic element.
Drawing inspiration from historical decorative traditions across multiple cultures, the Heritage Tassel bag references protection, celebration and continuity. Reinterpreted through a contemporary lens and inspired by the colours of the UAE flag, it becomes a modern talisman celebrating resilience, craftsmanship and cultural pride.
The collection encapsulates everything Veganologie represents: sustainability that never overshadows design, and heritage that feels contemporary rather than nostalgic.
Building Trust Through Transparency
As sustainability becomes increasingly mainstream, consumers have also become significantly more discerning.
“Today,” Maheshwari says, ”‘sustainable’ by itself is no longer enough.”
Luxury clients expect detailed information about materials, manufacturing processes and certifications. Transparency has become as valuable as craftsmanship.
“They don’t just want beautiful products. They want proof.”
This demand has, in many ways, strengthened Veganologie.
The company has embraced internationally recognised certifications while maintaining full visibility across its supply chain, allowing customers to verify claims rather than simply trust marketing language.
For Maheshwari, this evolution represents a healthy shift within the industry.
“The higher the expectations become, the better the entire industry has to perform.”
A New Definition of Luxury
Asked about the future, Maheshwari’s ambitions extend well beyond commercial expansion.
Of course, Veganologie intends to strengthen its presence throughout the GCC while expanding internationally. New materials, broader product categories and strategic retail partnerships all form part of the roadmap.
Yet her greatest aspiration is remarkably philosophical.
“I want Veganologie to be remembered as proof.”
Proof that sustainability and luxury never belonged in separate conversations.
Proof that a brand born in Dubai can influence global luxury rather than simply follow it.
And perhaps most importantly, proof that doing the right thing for our Planet and doing the right thing for craftsmanship can ultimately become the very same decision.
If that vision becomes reality, the word “sustainable” may eventually disappear from luxury fashion altogether, not because it failed, but because it became unnecessary.
“When sustainable luxury is simply called luxury,” Maheshwari concludes, “I’ll know we’ve helped change the conversation.”
It is an ambitious goal. But judging by Veganologie’s trajectory, it is one that already feels well underway.
