Antonio Riva’s The Velvet Night: The Roaring Twenties, Reconsidered

Dina Yassin

At Milan Fashion Week, Italian designer Antonio Riva presented The Velvet Night, his Fall/Winter 2026 collection, revisiting the 1920s through the lens of modern femininity. Rather than reproduce the decade’s familiar extravagance, Riva focuses on its changing attitudes towards dressing and independence. Elongated silhouettes, fluid cuts and swaying fringes reference the freedom of movement that helped redefine women’s wardrobes, while burgundy, powder pink, black and gold establish a rich, cinematic palette.

Fabric gives the collection its character. Velvet lends depth and drama, structured Mikado sharpens the silhouettes, and delicate embroidery introduces detail without overwhelming the clothes. The contrast between softness and structure reflects the collection’s central idea: the tension between inherited conventions and a woman’s freedom to define herself. In The Velvet Night, the Roaring Twenties become more than a period reference. They offer Riva a way to examine how fashion expresses changing ideas of femininity, independence and personal identity.
