A Silent Force Called ‘MOM’

I’m back at it! January was a whirlwind, and to be honest, it still is. Juggling work, writing, and family life can be demanding-especially when your kids need you more than the average. I’m sure many women can relate.
Speaking of busy moms, my guest this month is Barbara Salem-a dear friend of mine and, in my opinion, the ultimate Octopus Mom. She keeps all the balls in the air, balancing family, business, a part- time job, and friendships with incredible grace. What she does is not only impressive but also deeply creative and supportive.
Smile, You’re on Camera
When I think of Barbara back in the day, I picture her with a camera in hand, capturing party moments in the club-including mine. The second she appeared, you knew it was time to strike your best pose, flash a smile, and hope the club lights worked their magic. But no worries-Barbara always knew exactly which shot would make you look your best. “I’ve been a photographer since 2005. Yes, it all started with club photography-a fun way to explore my creativity behind the lens. Today, I’m a business photographer working with fashion brands, corporations, and universities. I’m also a marketer, and combining that with photography is my personal power.”
Take Two… Action!
Beyond her photography and marketing career, Barbara is also deeply involved in supporting her son Diyah’s acting journey. Diyah is a cast member of the well-known Dutch soap opera Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden. I asked if she relates to the term momager, a concept popularized by the Kardashian family.

“I know the term, but I don’t consider myself a momager,” she explains. “A momager manages their child’s career and often earns from it-that’s not me. My children have dreams, and I simply help them achieve them.”
Barbara dedicates her time and energy to being a full support system for her son, and it’s no surprise that his star is rising. I know Diyah as an outgoing, happy boy who embraces what he loves to do. Or, as his mother puts it: “Diyah has always been a jokester-never afraid of what people think, always a free spirit.”
I asked Barbara how she helps Diyah with his acting career.
“As a photographer, I started by creating a strong portfolio for him. At first, he wasn’t accepted by the top casting agencies, but once he got in, commercial requests started pouring in. That helped him build a showreel, leading to his first supporting role in Mees Kees. From there, industry professionals started recognizing his talent. Of course, he still has to audition for every role, but with more experience, he’s becoming more confident in his craft. My role? I just drive him to auditions or sets where he’s needed. It feels like I’m always on the road, but the real work is his to do. He loves what he does, and that makes all the difference.”
With her experience as a mother in the entertainment industry, I was curious what advice she would give to moms just starting out in this world.
“Listen to your child and don’t push them. Never accept unpaid work, and be selective about the opportunities you take. Not every role is worth it. And don’t be discouraged if your child isn’t chosen- it’s never personal. If it doesn’t happen today, another opportunity will come. Be patient and treat every experience as a learning moment.”
Family First
For Barbara, being there for her husband and children-supporting their dreams and goals-comes first. “I’m always a mom first. I discuss everything with my family; I never make decisions alone. With Diyah, we decide together. I’m not the kind of mom who pushes her kids into the limelight. If their dreams change, I’l be their number one fan no matter what.”

When I asked how she balances everything, Barbara laughed. “Part-time work-haha! And good planning. Luckily, my husband helps with that. Plus, the kids are getting older and becoming more independent. Diyah trains five times a week and has a soccer match on the weekends. We also try to keep vacations free from appointments. Ideally, we travel-if it fits within their sports and acting schedules. That way, we make sure we have quality family time, just for us.”
And what makes her happy? “I’m happy when my family is happy-when everyone is doing what they love.”
And that’s Barbara. A quiet yet powerful force behind the camera, behind her family, and behind her friends. Mastering motherhood like a pro.
