Al Ula, nestled in the northwestern region of Saudi Arabia, is a breathtaking expanse of desert, towering rock formations, and ancient history. This mystical land, once a thriving center of trade and civilization, is not only known for its archaeological significance but also for the deep spiritual legends that have been passed down through generations. Beyond its sandstone cliffs and Nabatean tombs, Al Ula is believed to hold secrets of divine interventions, ancient curses, and spiritual encounters that continue to intrigue visitors and locals alike.
The Myth of the Cursed City of Al-Hijr (Madain Saleh)
One of the most famous spiritual legends surrounding Al Ula is the tale of Madain Saleh, also known as Al-Hijr. This ancient city, carved into the rock by the Nabateans over 2,000 years ago, was once a flourishing trade hub. However, Islamic tradition links it to the people of Thamud, who, according to the Quran, were punished by God for their arrogance and disobedience.
The story tells of the Prophet Salih, who was sent to guide the Thamud people toward righteousness. As a divine test, a miraculous she-camel was sent to them, but they defied the warning and slaughtered the sacred animal. In response, a divine wrath descended upon them, leaving the city abandoned and cursed. Even today, many locals believe that lingering spirits haunt the ruins, and some avoid spending the night there, fearing supernatural forces.
The Mystical Energies of Jabal Ikmah
Jabal Ikmah, often referred to as the ‘Open Library of Al Ula,’ is a vast canyon filled with ancient inscriptions dating back to the Dadanite and Lihyanite civilizations. Some travelers and spiritual seekers claim that the area emits a mysterious energy, making it a sacred space for meditation and reflection.

Legends suggest that the mountain was a place of spiritual rituals where ancient priests would communicate with celestial beings. Some visitors have reported feeling a deep sense of tranquility and spiritual awakening when touching the engraved stones, believing that the wisdom of the past still resonates within them.
