Nomad Mompreneur: Thriving in Business and Motherhood Abroad
Hello Gazetta readers!
In previous columns, I’ve explored DEI and highlighted stories of those whose voices are seldom heard. What I haven’t shared yet is my journey as a digital nomad mom, embracing both travel and entrepreneurship as a single mother. My recent adventures in Abu Dhabi and Dubai provided the perfect opportunity to give you a peek into my day-to-day life.
While I’m eager to unveil some exciting news in our March edition, today’s focus is on a typical day for me in Abu Dhabi, juggling motherhood and my career. My work schedule is built around our little one’s sleep, starting at 4 AM until 8 AM, and resuming during naptime from 1 PM to 2:30 PM.
Through my initiative, Manic Momboss, I speak at mental health conferences and offer a masterclass and online course for corporates looking to support employees with mental health issues. My journey with bipolar disorder inspired me to write a book in Dutch, soon to be published in English, aimed at sharing coping strategies. The courses I’ve developed, currently in Dutch, are designed for both individuals with mental health challenges and HR departments, with plans to expand them into English.
This month began with me speaking at an international mental health & psychiatry conference in Dubai, conveniently scheduled during our child’s naptime. Finding child-friendly, value-aligned places to work is crucial for me. The Bab Al Qasr Hotel in Abu Dhabi was my choice, not just for its sustainable swimming pool but because it offers a fantastic environment for children to interact with peers from around the globe. Access to the swimming area is made affordable through Groupon, free for children under two, with an even more cost-effective monthly membership option.
Morning times are lively with families gathering for the hotel’s complimentary breakfast, ensuring our little one always finds playmates. Naptime is my cue for Zoom meetings, with the hotel providing tranquil spots for calls. When possible, I enjoy engaging with other hotel guests, from a seasoned traveler from Berlin to the hotel’s lifeguards, sharing their love for their work.
And the culinary experiences? Those deserve their own story, which I promise to share in an upcoming article. Stay with me for more insights into balancing work, motherhood, and the pursuit of new adventures as a mompreneur.
