It All Starts and Ends with Family

Chantal Ho-A-Hing

As we close out another year, how do you, as a mother, wife, working professional, entrepreneur, and simply you, reflect on 2024?

While I’m all for looking ahead to the New Year, I find myself wanting to pause, revisit the beautiful moments, and reflect on the lessons this year has brought. So yes, this column is a personal note.

This year, I took nine months of maternity leave—something I could afford to do as my own boss. Those months were precious. Spending uninterrupted time with my baby allowed her to adjust to life outside of me, while I could fully support our eldest daughter. I also had the chance to help my husband with his latest venture, Boyd Basketball, an elite camp for young, talented players aged 12-16. Seeing his excitement as the first enrollments rolled in was a moment of pure joy—a reminder that success isn’t just about numbers but the emotions and dreams fulfilled along the way.

A Legacy Honored

One of the year’s greatest achievements was the international recognition of my grandmother’s book, Suriname, ik ben, a Dutch classic now available in English as My Name is Sita. Published by Sandorf Passage, it is now accessible in the UK, US, and online through Amazon. I wish my grandmother, Bea Vianen, the author, could see this milestone. I know she would be proud as I am. Family runs through her story just as it does in my life. If you’d like a glimpse of her work, you can read an excerpt here.

Life’s Twists and Turns

Life is far from linear. This year brought moments of celebration and success but also challenges and uncertainty. Through it all, one lesson stood out: the little luxuries of life—like the health and happiness of my family—are sacred. When my loved ones are thriving, I am too. They are the catalyst for my personal and professional fulfillment, and their well-being remains my greatest treasure. Happiness, I’ve learned, isn’t something to chase; it resides within us.
