Sculputural Chairs By Carla Tolomeo
Oblong Contemporary Art Gallery, the popular international gallery having two spaces one being in Pietrasanta and the other perched on the scenic Blue Waters island in Dubai host the iconic exhibits of the famous artist, Carla Tolomeo.
Artist, sculptor and writer, Carla Tolomeo is multi-talented, inquisitive, and constantly searching to add innovation to her artistic creations; with her Chair-sculptures she is capable of transforming commonly used objects into an elegant parade of sumptuous trophies.
The chair, often a neglected item of everyday use, is transformed into an anthropomorphic and sensual object thanks to the exquisite materials used and its allusive forms. Certain creations imply human features, an aspect which gives them a uniqueness normally typical of a subject rather than an object. A subject/object – or the Chair – which in Carla Tolomeo’s own words becomes a portrait/self-portrait of the person who will own it, a reflection of one’s own ego.
Gazett quizzed her, Why Chairs, always chairs, and only chairs?
Perhaps, admits Carla Tolomeo, because they conceal a sin, and indeed possibly they conjure it up. I view a chair, she adds, as a portrait, and it can even become a self- portrait. Carla Tolomeo, artist native of Pinerolo since 1997 she set aside her love for painting to devote herself to her new art form, the Chair. Each piece is a tale of what she is living at the time, or of a memory, of how much she wants I want to relive those moments. The message I would like to convey is life. I have nothing but the passion of living, added Tolomeo.
She no longer represents but presents. She has emerged from the surface of illusion to create chairs which are real, and yet at the same time unreal. In a certain, manual sense, she has become a craftswoman, she works with trimmings and velvets, with foam rubber and elegant fabrics. But the substance of art can undoubtedly be that too.
What matters, what is essential is the result and her message that of a passion for life!
We asked the founder of Oblong Gallery whether Chairs as an art piece can be an investment and we are fascinated by what Paola said, “ From the the minute I set sight on them, they created such magical feelings and moments with their unorthodox shapes and mystic colours. If there is an artwork that is relevant more than ever right now, in terms of an investment, it would have to be a high-quality chair to boost your interiors whilst working from home during these uncertain times of the global pandemic’
