Oud-IJsselmonde: A Window into Rotterdam’s Rich History
Hello, I'm Vans, mother of two boys (1 and 7…
Let me take you on a personal journey to a place that’s close to my heart and stirs my passion for real estate and architecture: the quaint village of Oud-IJsselmonde in Rotterdam. Every day, as I drive past this village, its old-world charm and the timeless ambiance of its streets beckon me, almost like a portal to another century.
Oud-IJsselmonde, ensconced within Rotterdam’s vivacious city limits, holds the distinguished title of being the city’s only preserved village center. This distinction is particularly poignant considering Rotterdam’s history; the city was largely rebuilt following the devastating bombings of May 14, 1940, during World War II. Thus, the village is a rare snapshot of history that survived the turmoil.
The village’s layout, a dike village characterized by an Upper and Lower Street, traces its origins back to the year 1072. Yet, it was the dike’s construction post the 1421 flood disaster that really shaped Oud-IJsselmonde’s present-day structure. Among its historical treasures was ‘t Huys in Yselmonde, the last of four castles, now only remembered by its surviving coach house, built in 1679. This coach house, having undergone several renovations over the centuries, stands as a silent statement to the castle’s bygone elegance.
While the village is a mosaic of 19th-century neo-architectural styles, my heart belongs to the grandeur and symmetry of the 18th century, particularly the Louis styles. These styles, with their stately windows and decorative ornaments, offer a sense of peace and balance. Although Oud-IJsselmonde itself doesn’t house this style, a stone’s throw away is Huys Ten Donck, a splendid embodiment of the architectural finesse I adore.
Amidst the village’s charm, it’s disheartening to see some structures in disrepair. Yet, even in their neglected state, they hold a certain allure, presenting a canvas for restoration to their original splendor.
Presently, a gem among homes built in 1922 finds itself on the market. This detached house, sprawling across three floors and offering a living space of approximately 158m2, is available for €475,000. It represents a unique opportunity to be part of Oud-IJsselmonde’s rich history and vibrant community.
For those captivated by the prospect of immersing themselves in a piece of Rotterdam’s authentic historical tapestry, this is your call to adventure. What's Your Reaction?
Hello, I'm Vans, mother of two boys (1 and 7 years old). Two years ago I founded MoVa Wonen, which arose from my hobby that got out of hand: styling homes for people with limited financial resources who still want a stylish living environment. My interest expanded to real estate, where I discovered that you can offer homes to investors without sellers paying sales costs. With MoVa Wonen I now focus on finding properties for people who, for various reasons, cannot or do not want to pay sales costs and want to get rid of their home quickly. Within the real estate world, I noticed that there is little attention in the Netherlands for customers with a non-Western background. Although MoVa Wonen is still in its infancy, I hope to contribute to growth opportunities and equal opportunities for people with diverse backgrounds in the real estate market in the future.
