In an unprecedented collaboration between the world of high fashion and space exploration, Italian luxury fashion powerhouse Prada is teaming up with Axiom Space, a Texas-based space startup, to create state-of-the-art lunar spacesuits for NASA’s upcoming Artemis III mission, slated for 2025.
This landmark partnership, the first of its kind between a luxury fashion house and a commercial space company, comes as the world anticipates the first crewed lunar landing in over five decades, scheduled for 2025. This mission also bears historic significance, as it will carry the first woman to set foot on the Moon.
“We are ecstatic to join forces with Prada to create the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit,” said Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space. Prada’s wealth of expertise in materials, innovative design, and manufacturing techniques will be harnessed to develop spacesuits that can withstand the rigors of space and the lunar environment.
Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada Group Marketing Director, conveyed his enthusiasm, saying, “Prada’s enduring commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation for the betterment of humanity has now expanded into a realm of exploration and pioneering spirit—space. We are privileged to contribute to this historic mission with Axiom Space. The decades of experimentation, cutting-edge technology, and design acumen that we’ve cultivated will now find expression in the design of spacesuits for the Artemis era. It is a true celebration of the boundless capacity of human creativity and innovation to advance civilization.”
The AxEMU spacesuit is designed to equip astronauts with advanced capabilities for space exploration while offering NASA a commercially developed system for human presence on the Moon. It builds upon the existing NASA Exploration Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) spacesuit by providing enhanced flexibility, robust protection against the space environment, and specialized tools for exploration and scientific research.
The development of these next-generation spacesuits marks a significant milestone in humanity’s journey of space exploration. These suits will not only support our return to the Moon but also foster a deeper understanding of our lunar neighbor, our solar system, and beyond.
